Roman Selsky is a central figure of high modernism in Ukraine and the founder of the modern Lviv school of painting. He worked in the fields of easel and graphic art. The author's artistic style reflects the entire evolution of European modernism, from impressionism to abstraction.
The artist never worked in only one direction. Under the influence of various modern Western European art, he formed his own style, which one can trace to the trends of Cezanne, Bonnard, Matisse, Leger, and Picasso. In particular, it is noticeable in his numerous nude images. The artist treats them as genre scenes: naked women are depicted in various poses behind the toilet. The sincerity and simplicity of the image are emphasized in a naive, flat, and decorative manner, where the main advantage is given to the free interpretation of bright, clean colors.
