The Mother of God and the Son

Description

The Christian motifs in Woodon Baklytsky's works are his appeal to national spiritual values. However, ‘Mother and Son’ has nothing to do with a traditional icon. Instead of the figures of saints, we see abstract decorative masks. The elongated rhythmic outlines give a sense of constantly cyclical movement. Iconic masks look at us, ask for interaction, and provoke emotions. This dialogue takes place only on a subconscious level, while outside everything is overgrown with bizarre flowers, chained in barbed wire. With this, the artist speaks about the ban on religion, persecution, and the Soviet government's desire to erase Ukrainian identity and our spiritual values.
