Portrait

Description

Mykola Trehub is a Ukrainian painter, non-conformist, and prominent representative of the Kyiv underground of the 1970s.

In the work ‘Portrait’ we see Ukrainian landscapes. From a bird's-eye view, the audience observes the fields in bloom. In their bright color and unusual rhythm, the author considers the embodiment of Ukrainian identity. The masked portrait in the foreground is reminiscent of Picasso's ‘masks’ - an aboriginal archetype. It encourages us to find the answer to the questions ‘Who am I?’, and ‘Am I a representative of the authentic indigenous population?’
