Portrait with the moon

Description

Here, the mask is once again looking at us carefully. The mask is an ancient image and an indispensable attribute of cult rituals. For Mykola Trehub, it was a symbol of escaping from reality, a talisman against unknown threatening spirits or Soviet reality. His distorted, deformed masks reflect the essence of a person, his psychology, and his secret fears. They embody the artist's anxiety and existential experiences.

The masked portrait against the abstract Ukrainian landscape is a search for identity. The answer to the question ‘Who am I?’ Trehub seems to say he belongs to Ukraine, he merges with its nature.
