Roman Selsky is a central figure of high modernism in Ukraine and the founder of the modern Lviv school of painting. He worked in the fields of easel and graphic art. The author's artistic style reflects the entire evolution of European modernism, from impressionism to abstraction.
In the early 1950s, Roman Selskyi's artistic language changed. Under the authorities' pressure, the artist was forced to take the path of ideologically correct art, to comply with censorship to exhibit at Soviet exhibitions. At this time, the artist gravitated towards the aesthetics of socialist realism, turning to scenes of collective farm labor. He interprets his compositions with an uncharacteristic classical perspective and realistic interpretation of volumes.
